Map highlighting Cedar Mountain Experiment Station

This site was established in 1978 by cooperative agreement with private land and livestock owners. It is located about 30 miles southeast of Cedar City, Utah on Miner's Peak. It is high elevation, mountain rangeland characterized by a mosaic of aspen and oak forest mixed with open grassland. It is suited for summer grazing because of heavy winter snow cover. The property consists of about 3,200 acres leased by the UAES from two families. The site is fenced into 18 pastures of about 180 acres each. Livestock include cattle and sheep owned by local ranchers. Research has been conducted as a cooperative effort between the Departments of ADVS and Rangeland Resources. From 1979 through 1992, the site was used to compare mixed cattle and sheep grazing to each species grazed alone. Additionally, deferred-rotation grazing was compared to continuous grazing. This study was replaced by a new, ongoing study to compare rest-rotation, deferred-rotation, and continuous grazing in 1993.
